Twitch is continuing to expand, evolve, and diversify it’s content, and is reportedly planning to fund a slate of original, unscripted series that would be live and interactive, airing two to three times a week, according to Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw.
According to the report, which references an internal document seen by Bloomberg, the preferred genres are game shows, dating shows, sports, music, and talk shows.
The report goes on to say that the company isn’t trying to abandon it’s base of young, male gamers, and has told it’s partners it is looking for shows that specifically appeal to two demographics of interest: male gaming enthusiasts between the ages of 18 and 24, and anyone between the ages of 18 and 24 that are interested in general entertainment.
Twitch is clearly honing in on original programming, and looking to craft some of that content in a similar light of popular reality television shows.
The company (Amazon) reportedly plans to spend anywhere from $50,000 to $250,000 a week on these series, which would include four to 10 hours of programming, per Bloomberg.
Twitch made it clear in their request for pitches that: “We are seeking creative partners to help us set a new bar for multiplayer entertainment.” Just in case you were thinking of escape rooms, Twitch made it clear that escape room content isn’t in their interest pool; “Everyone pitches an escape room stream,” the company said in its request. “If you were thinking of pitching insert-talent in an escape room, no need!”.
Twitch continues to build on what is further moving away from being an exclusive gaming content platform to more towards the arena where they could be competing with the likes of cable television, Netflix, Hulu, and others that present more traditional television content.
